How to Apply for PAN Card Online

Applying for a PAN card has become easier for people these days as they can now apply for a fresh PAN online as well as offline. Let us discuss how to apply for PAN card in both ways.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online – Step by Step

The government has made provisions for applicants to apply for PAN through the Income Tax PAN Services Unit of NSDL. Follow these easy steps to apply for a PAN online:

Step 2: Select the Application type – New PAN for Indian citizens, foreign citizens or for change/correction in existing PAN data.

Step 3: Select your category – individual, associations of persons, body of individuals, etc.

Step 4: Fill in all the required details like name, date of birth, email address and your mobile number in the PAN form.
Step 5: On submitting the form, you will get a message regarding the next step.

Step 6: Click on the “Continue with the PAN Application Form” button.

Step 7: You will be redirected to the new page where you have to submit your digital e-KYC.

Step 8: Now enter your personal details in the next part of the form.
Step 9: In the next part of the form, enter your contact and other details.
Step 10: Enter your area code, AO Type and other details in this part of the form. You can also find these details in the tab below

Step 11: The last part of the form is the document submission and declaration.

Step 12: You will get to see your complete form to make corrections, if any. If you do not want to make any changes, click Proceed button.
Step 13: You will be redirected to the payment section where you have to make payment either through demand draft or through netbanking/debit/credit card.

Step 14: Once you make the payment, you will get the acknowledge form with the 16 digit acknowledgement slip.
Step 15: Take a print of this acknowledgement form.
Step 16: Attach two recent passport size photographs sign in the space provided on the acknowledgment form.
Step 17: Enclose all the documents (self-attested) mentioned in the form along with Demand draft (if payment was not done online) and acknowledgement form.
Step 18: Post the envelope containing all these documents to the NSDL address mentioned below-

Applying for a PAN Card Offline

Applicants can choose the offline method as well to apply for the PAN card. They can visit a nearby TIN NSDL centre and follow the steps:

    • Download and print form 49A. The form can be downloaded from
      https://www.tin-nsdl.com/downloads/pan/download/Form49A_NSDL%20e-Gov_01.06.16.pdf
    • Fill the form and affix two passport size photographs on the form.
    • Pay the fee in the form of demand draft in favour of ‘NSDL – PAN’ payable at Mumbai.
    • Attach self-attested photocopies of proofs with the form.

  • On successful processing of the application, PAN will be generated and sent to the residential address of the applicant.

Fee Charged when Applying for a PAN Card

The fee charged for applying for a PAN card that needs to be dispatched to an Indian address is Rs. 110/- and the fees for new PAN application for dispatch outside India is Rs. 1020/- (inclusive of the GST). Fee payment can be made through demand draft drawn in favour of ‘NSDL-PAN’, credit card/debit card or net banking.

(a) Self attested photocopy of any of the below documents:

  • Adhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving License
  • Passport
  • Ration Card having applicants photograph
  • Arm’s License
  • Photo identity card issued by state or central government or any public sector undertakings
  • Pensioner’s card carrying the photograph of the applicant
  • Health service scheme cards issued by central government or Ex-serviceman contributory health scheme card with photograph.

(b) Certificate of identity in a prescribed format signed by a Member of Parliament/ Member of Legislative Assembly/Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted Officer (original certificate needs to be enclosed)

(c) Bank certificate in original with a duly attested photograph of the applicant. The certificate issued should be on the letterhead of the bank with stamp and signature.

Proof of Address Required to Apply for PAN Card

(a) Photocopy of any one of the below documents needs to be submitted along with the PAN application:

  • Aadhaar Card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
  • Voter ID card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Copy of first and last page of spouse’s passport (if the address mentioning in the form matches with the address mentioned in the passport of spouse)
  • Post office passbook carrying the address of the applicant
  • Latest property tax assessment order
  • Domicile certificate issued by the government
  • Allotment letter issued by the state or central government (should not be more than three years old)
  • Property registration document

(b) Self-attested copy of any one of the below documents (not more than three months old)

(c) Certificate of address in original signed by a Member of Parliament/ Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted Officer, as the case may be (in prescribed format)

(d) Employer certificate in a prescribed format (in original).

Proof of Date of Birth Required for PAN Card Application Online

Copy of any of the below documents bearing the name, date of birth of the applicant:

  • Aadhaar Card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
  • Voter ID card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any office authorize to issue birth certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate
  • SSLC certificate or Mark sheet of recognized body
  • Photo identity card bearing the name and DOB issued by state or central government or any public sector undertaking
  • Domicile certificate issued by the government
  • Photo card issued by Central Government Health Service Scheme or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
  • Pension Payment Order (PPO)
  • Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage
  • Affidavit obtained in lieu of date of birth certificate.
  • In case the applicant is minor, parent’s proof of identity and proof of address are accepted as ID and address proof of minor applicant.
  • In case of HUF, an affidavit made by the Karta of HUF bearing name, father’s name and address of all the coparceners on the date of application along with above mentioned proofs in the name of Karta of HUF has to be enclosed along with PAN application.
  • An Indian citizen residing outside India can produce a latest copy of bank account statement in country of residence.
  • In case the communication address is office address, proof of office address has to be submitted along with proof of residence address.
